Today Bible Verse – Psalm 23:1
“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.”
Today Devotion
This verse opens one of the most beloved psalms in all of Scripture. David begins with a declaration of trust so complete that it leaves no room for fear or want: “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.”
The picture of God as a shepherd is not sentimental—it is deeply practical. A shepherd provides food, water, direction, and safety. Sheep cannot survive without constant care. David, once a shepherd himself, knew that his well-being depended entirely on the Lord’s guidance.
Notice the personal claim: my shepherd. This is not just a general truth about who God is; it is a personal relationship of dependence and belonging. To say “I lack nothing” is not to deny hardship or difficulty. David faced both. It is to confess that in God’s care, no trial can rob us of what we most need—His presence, provision, and peace.
When God is our Shepherd, we are not defined by scarcity but by abundance in Him. Our culture pushes us to always want more, to feel incomplete unless we achieve or possess something else. But Psalm 23:1 confronts that restless hunger and anchors us in God’s sufficiency. In Christ, we are whole.
The verse also points us forward to Jesus, who declared in John 10:11, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” The care David sang of in Psalm 23 is fulfilled in Christ, who not only leads but also saves His flock through the cross.
Today, this verse calls us to rest. Rest from striving, rest from fear, rest from the endless craving for more. If the Lord is our Shepherd, then even in valleys, we are not abandoned. Even in lack, we are not empty. In Him, we truly lack nothing.
Today Prayer
Father, we thank You for being our Shepherd. You know our needs before we speak them, and You guide us with wisdom and love. Forgive us for the times we chase after things that cannot satisfy. Teach us to rest in Your care and to trust Your provision. May our hearts find peace in You today, knowing that in Christ, we lack nothing.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
